Dress code

In an effort to promote a more effective learning environment, foster school unity and pride, improve overall student performance, and distinguish our students from other students in our community, The PS 12 School Leadership Team has instituted a school uniform policy. All students of PS12 must wear the school uniform Monday through Friday. There is no dress down day.

  • Purple polo shirts with PS 12 school crest, grey or black bottoms and jumpers, black shoes or sneakers.

  • All sweatshirts, sweaters, and hoodies that are worn over the students’ shirt, should be black or grey.

  • PS 12 hoodies may also be worn.

Prohibited forms of dress at PS 12 include, but are not limited to:

  • Hats or caps (except for headwear worn for religious observance).

  • Clothing that contains references to drugs, alcohol, sex, violence, racism, or gang-affiliation.

  • Revealing clothing that does not provide coverage of torso, undergarments, and private body parts, including see-through garments of any kind.

  • Flip-flops, crocs or sandals with toes exposed.

  • Sunglasses while indoors.

If a student comes to school wearing clothing prohibited by the Dress Code, then the student’s parents will be notified, the student may be subject to the interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code, and the student will be expected to make appropriate adjustments to his/her clothing to conform with the Dress Code (e.g., turning shirts inside out, borrowing temporary clothing until the end of the school day, etc.).

Dress Expectations
Our school promotes a welcoming and inclusive environment where students have the autonomy to express themselves through their attire, guided by the principles of safety, respect, and equality. In accordance with the New York City Public Schools (DOE) policy, students have the right to determine their own attire, except where it poses safety risks, disrupts learning, or violates anti-discrimination policies. Our dress code is gender-neutral, ensuring that all students are treated equitably and without bias. Attire containing discriminatory language, inappropriate imagery, profanity, obscenity, nudity, or references to violence or gang affiliation is strictly prohibited. Revealing clothing that does not provide full coverage of private body parts is also considered inappropriate. Our school's dress expectations prioritize inclusivity, respect, and student autonomy while maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment. By adhering to these guidelines, we aim to foster a sense of belonging and acceptance for all members of our school community.
